Journal Editor's Spring 2012 Update

Dr. Donald E. Thrall, DVM, PhD, Editor-in-Chief

Dr. Jones assumed her Editorial position as of January 1, 2012. She has been training on the manuscript submission/management software and has been provided with information on various aspects of journal management. She has begun directing the review of submitted manuscripts and slowly assuming other journal responsibilities. She should be handling most journal matters by July 1 and will take over full time on January 1, 2013.

Wiley’s marketing department has been reorganizing into a new framework and structure to align subject portfolios and management. This basically means that moving forward, the journal will be benefiting from a marketer who is dedicated exclusively to just one subject area and is therefore able to acquire deep subject knowledge.

Manuscript submissions for 2011 (229 papers) were slightly higher than in 2010 (218 papers). The distribution of manuscript types was unchanged. Reports of individual patients continue to be scrutinized heavily. The goal is to have a maximum of 1-2 Imaging Diagnosis articles per issue.

For the 2011 calendar year, the overall reject ratio (45%) was nearly identical to that in 2010. This rejection rate does not jeopardize identification of adequate high quality material to fill 6 issues per year containing a total of 720 pages. The reject ratio is highest for Imaging Diagnosis features.

We make every effort to expedite the review process. The mean time from submission to decision is less than 30 days for original submissions. Maintaining a short manuscript processing time is important for author satisfaction and continued growth in manuscript submissions.
